Shopping for Parts & Pieces « Thread Started on Feb 16, 2009, 6:15pm »
Perhaps it was shameless to drop so low as to go to the black market in order to find parts for repairs but she really needed what they had here. The only legal sellers she knew of essentially tracked people down who bought certain items. They wouldn't take them back or anything, no, but they'd keep an eye on whomever bought it and wait for them to screw something up. They always did, and Alice didn't only do repairs for reputable people. She'd take whoever needed her assistance and was willing to offer up some cash. That was the way the world worked, wasn't it? She didn't need to be investigated if someone decided that they wanted to blow up a city with one of the upgraded weapons she gave them. That being the case, the only real way she would have been able to continue business as usual would have been to get what she needed illegally. Was it really so bad? Besides, it wasn't like she was looking for anything in particular. Alice was just browsing today, but as soon as an idea came to her she'd end up looking seriously for whichever parts or pieces she needed to get.
She'd already spoken with an older man about a newer gun and left hand pieces he'd taken from a busted KLF and a more advanced left arm piece that went to an LFO. It was hooked up on thick wires that could extend from the wrist. It looked like it was used to drag enemies who were out of range into a closer position for whatever reason. Those were becoming popular among the other black market sellers. They didn't work very well- gravity often was powerful enough to take down the hand before it reached the target and sometimes wouldn't retract. Either way, everything he'd had to sell was busted, so he was selling it cheap. He didn't have the slightest clue how to fix it. Luckily, Alice did. She was good with those things.
Of course, she hadn't been able to take them there. Instead, there was a pickup address that she could go to later and get them when she wanted to. Of course, she was wary about doing it that way but she could find the guy again with no problem if he tried to cheat her out of her money. He was a regular around here that went by a fake name. John Smith, he called himself. Anyone with a brain stem would have been able to tell that it wasn't the name he was born with. Really. Either way, when she didn't get what she ordered she'd find him and she'd get her money back as well as interest.
Of all things, the prosthetic limbs that she'd been wearing for most of her life were good because they made it so that she could walk and work for a living and because it was hard to fight someone who had metal arms and legs. She didn't feel pain in the extremities and knives didn't do any good, either. Guns could be a little dangerous, but people didn't often think of shooting at her stomach. Instead, they always aimed for the legs or her head, which was easily guarded by one or both arms. When Alice really, desperately wanted to be, she was deadly.
Before very long, she headed back into the slums where her apartment and small business were located. She didn't get a whole lot of business but what she did get was definitely worth it. Military personnel sometimes risked being murdered in order to get her services and upgrades, and they tipped very well.
Life was generally good, considering the area she resided in.
